Update: We have learnt some things about the Video out that you should know:
- SMS mode is supported!
- Audio is still not supported
- Some VERY old HDMI monitors/tv's will not support frame locking to the gamegears frame rate. Frame locking can be disabled on our kit though screen tearing may be visible in this mode. We haven't found a TV that can't support frame locked video.
- The video protocol we use is DVI - All monitors and TV's that we've tested here work fine, We are aware of one brand new Samsung TV which does not detect the video signal as we cannot include licensed HDMI code which that particular TV set requires. In this instance, you can install a device to 'correct' this. These are available on aliexpress, ebay, the usual places. We cannot debug further as we don't have a TV set which has this issue.
- Firmware IS updatable over USB. We are not sure if we'll release an update, but if we feel one is needed, we'll provide it.
Scaling modes:
- 4x3 Integer scaled - no shimmer, no tearing, frame locked to the GameGear
- 3x3 'square' mode - Integer scaled, no shimmer, no tearing, frame locked
- SMS modes: To-Do
Hardware:
- Custom assembled 640x480 IPS panel with the brightest backlight currently available (Note, other 640x480 panels will NOT be compatible with this hardware)
- FPGA core capable of scaling with zero latency/lag, pixel perfect
- FPGA core capable of producing TMDS video (DVI/ HDM... etc)
- VA0/1 supported, our VA0/1 ribbon is included.
Not Included:
- HD Video output kit (available HERE)
Notes:
- 4x3 integer scaling has slight horizontal overscan as per pic. Installer can open up the viewing window, or use another scaling mode.
- No CEC/EDID/Guard data is transmitted over the DVI/HD video channel - Your average monitor/display/tv/projector is fine with this - some newer Televisions will not recognise the video. All of our montiors/tv's/projectors display the image with zero issues so we cannot debug further. As a general rule, if your display accepts DVI, it will be fine.
- Audio over HD video is NOT currently supported
- HD Video install kit requires shell modding to install the HD video socket. SYF is working on a link port replacement to install a mini HD video socket. Check in with Math in our discord for availability.
- FPGA firmware is USB updatable - We may or may not provide firmware updates, this will be at our discretion. More info in our discord.
- Manual soldering of the pin header takes us time. If you're able to solder a pin header, we're happy to offer a discount on the kit.
